I have always struggled with my ethnic identity (being half Cherokee, and half Caucasian). So, seeing this trailer truly touched me in ways I cannot explain. Being of Native decent, it has always been difficult as society asks you to choose one or the other. Likewise, there are a lot of pre-conceived notions about individuals who can pass by in life as both Cherokee and White. I feel there is a great deal of resentment and anger there that I rarely approach. Before I dyed my hair, I was pelted with racial slurs regarding both Native American and Hispanic decent. After, if asked my background I would receive eye rolls and chuckles. I don’t pretend to know or understand the plight of a dark-skinned African American woman. I personally find all shades and tones beautiful, and undeserving of judgement or shame. I think my point here is that we need to stop looking for faults, and we definitely must redefine our ideals of beauty.
